In this assignment we learned all about what makes up a sonnet. A Shakespearean sonnet is a poem that contains 14 lines but the first 12 lines divide into 3 quatrains and the last two are called couplets. There is a rhyme scheme that you have to follow which is abab, cdcd, efef and the couplet is gg. You can only have 10 syllables per line and it has to end in the same rhyme scheme. It didn't have to be about love towards a person but it could be. We had to make sure we followed all the constraints in order to be able to call it a sonnet. We wrote our sonnet as a homework assignment and got critique for it the day after. We then revised it and turned it in for credit.
Reflection:
For this assignment, I chose to write about my love for volleyball. It is a sport that is relatively new to me but I really enjoy it. At the beginning I wasn't sure what I wanted to write about and I had thought to just choose a silly topic and flow with it. I was listening to other ideas and I thought of writing about volleyball. I had some trouble with my rhyme scheme my I got it. Throughout the poem it seems like I am writing about an abusive relationship but later on you find out it's all about volleyball. This was a fun assignment but it was also very challenging. I am proud of what I completed and I would like to continue learning more about this writing style.
