For this writing assignment we received a packet where we had to write 4 poems. We wrote a haiku poem, a carpe diem, an elegy, and a free verse poem. We wrote three haikus, one about the ocean, the trees, and the mountains. The haiku is also in a 5, 7, 5 syllable format. The carpe diem poem had to be about "seizing the day" and living life to the fullest. The structure was 2 stanzas and 4 lines in each stanza. The elegy had to be to someone who we knew that had passed and it had to be 3 stanzas with 4 lines each. The free verse had to be us personifying an emotion and had to be at least 10 lines long.
Reflection:
This assignment made me realize that there is many different styles of poetry and that not all poetry has to rhyme. I feel like one my strengths in poetry is writing haikus because I feel like I do a good job finding phrases that fit the syllable constraint. One thing I would like to work on in poetry is free verse poems because I have trouble writing things that don't have a set format. I would push myself to take more time to practice on my free verse skills. Overall I enjoyed writing these poems.
