What expectation did you have of biology / environmental science class at the start of the year? When was the last time you had biology or earth science?
Coming into junior year, I didn't have much of an idea of what biology class would be like. I did, though, know that it would be challenging as I remember how different chemistry class last year was than any of my other classes. So far, the semester is going okay. I feel that I am challenged but sometimes I do realize that what I'm learning doesn't make much sense to me right away which is usually what I'm used to.
Describe a memorable event when your perspective of what it means to be a scientist changed or was challenged. Why was this moment important for you?
A moment where I began to think different about scientist was when I realized the amount of connections it had to art. The goal for any artist and scientist is to create. The process used to create art and the process to answer any hypothesis is very very similar. They all come from inspiration, wonderings, and research. This was an important moment for me because it is when I realized the connection I have to science and although the end results might look very different, the way to get there is the same.
How have you evolved as a scientist this semester?
As a scientist, I feel that I’ve become a better observer as well as a more detailed one. I have learned to be very clear and very abstract with my thinking depending on the situation. This has helped me become a better student as I am more careful with detail. Another skill I’ve improved is my curiosity, which has come from paying more attention to detail.
