During the month of May, we started off our Shakespeare unit in humanities class. One of the reasons we did this in May is because this is the month where we passed away. We read The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet and analyzed it as well. We read this a little different than just a book. Since it is a play, each day we chose characters we wanted to be and we read the characters part in front of the class with the character hats we made. The character's hats had to represent who they were, we made hats for the Capulets (Juliet's family) ,the Montegues (Rome's family) and other characters such as the nurse, Friar Lawrence, Tybalt, and Benvolio. My partner and I chose to make the hat for Juliet. We had to draw a few sketches of our ideas and get it approved by our teacher and then proceed to make the final product. There was a lot of materials we could use on a table set out for us and we just took whatever we needed.
Reflection:
This mini project was super fun and a good way to start off this Shakespeare unit. It was so much fun getting to make the hats and it was even better when we saw our peers getting to use them in front of the whole class. My partner and I chose to do a flower crown because to us the flowers mean innocence and growth which is what we thought described Juliet. We also decided to go with a flower crown because it is in the shape of a halo which represents purity. We started off with pipe cleaners as the crown, then we added cut out leafs and at the end we added some cut out flowers we had made. Our crown could have been better by adding something inside the crown to make it more steady but at the end it turned out fine. I think my partner and I did a great job making our hat and having fun with it. If I were to do this again, I would probably take more time drawing out the sketch just so we knew exactly what we needed to make. Overall, I loved this project and I think it helped us a lot in having more interest in Shakespeare's work.
