Celebration slam is a live spoken word performance that our team did for the Dia de los Muertos exhibition earlier in the school year. In groups of four we had to write an original poem that somehow connected to death. We had to memorize our spoken word and have movements that went along with what you were saying. We performed this at the school for the Dia De Los Muertos exhibition and also at Memorial Park as another exhibition. We also made a website for our spoken word group and a drum beat to go with our poem. Throughout this project we also created a website to record our process.
Reflection:
My favorite part of this project was the exhibition itself. My group was the first group to go up, it was a lot of pressure but we did a great and we were able to set the tone for the rest of the poems. Knowing we were gonna be the first ones going up on stage we had to practice a lot and make sure we set the standards high. While practicing we always had trouble starting off all together, we never got it just right during the practices but on exhibition night we did perfect. I was so proud of my whole group for having memorized our lines and doing a great job portraying our piece. Ciro and Javi, two of my group members, had been having trouble memorizing their lines and I was getting stressed. Paola and I took time to practice with them over and over again until they got it right, it took a long time but they ended up knowing their lines almost perfectly. During this part of the project I learned a lot about how helping others impacts you and how you perform as a group. While helping Ciro and Javi learn their lines I also memorized them and was able to help them even more and speed up the process. Another thing I learned is that to get things done right you have to be patient. I discovered that I work better when I am relaxed but also with a bit of pressure. Our writing piece was powerful but I feel like putting more time and thought into it would've made it more emotional and meaningful to us. Using more metaphors, similes, and alliteration would have helped us make our poem a little more exciting to the audience. Overall I enjoyed this project and would like to do it again. I love the fact that we had Aleks do a beat for us in the background with his drums, I think it made exhibition that much more exciting and more people were drawn to it.
