Mentor Interview
Interviewer Name: Valeria Aguilar
Mentor Name: Mario Mesquita
Date of Interview: 5-29-18
Site: Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego
For my mentor interview, Mia and I decided to interview our mentor together so that he wouldn't have to take so much time to be interviewed separately. Our interview was mainly centered around Mario's career and the path he took to get there. One of the first questions we asked was "When you were a junior in high school what were your career aspirations?", his response was that he didn't know exactly what he wanted to do but he did know what he wanted to avoid, "I wanted to avoid education cause that's actually what my mom did she was an academic advisor and counselor and became the director of a multicultural center at the local community college." I thought his response was interesting as many high schoolers are always thinking about what they want to do and I believe one way of getting there is learning what things you don't want to do. By knowing the path that he did not want to take, it became more clear which paths he could give a try to. Another part that stuck with me from this interview was Mario's response to "What advice do you have to your teenage self about college and career?" his response felt assuring to me, as someone who is always wanting to try new things. "I think I already knew as a teen that trying new things was always important. Maybe just encourage that a little bit more but also not to be so shy" he said, I'm not a shy person but I can definitely come off as closed off to people who I don't know which is particularly why this stayed with me. Although Im always willing to try new things, I want to change that first impression of me so that more doors open and stay open for myself.
